Contact ListThe Social Sciences Computing Cluster is composed of many machines and servers, and performs a wide variety of functions. The purpose of this bulletin is to assist you in determining who to contact if you desire assistance or wish to notify someone of a problem. In many cases, multiple contacts are possible. Please be considerate in your use of this information. Sending the same question to multiple contacts consumes resources inefficiently. As a rule of thumb, start with the generalists, and work to the specialists. General hardware and software troubleshooting on your desktop computer - call the NUIT Support Center at 847-491-HELP. Student consultants serve as your first line of support, to help you determine the exact nature of your problem. If your problem doesn't require immediate attention, or if the phone lines are backed up, you can send email to consultant@northwestern.edu. You'll receive a response within one business day. The Statistical Software for the Social Sciences bulletin describes the statistical and mathematical packages available on the SSCC. The SSCC runs Linux programs. Programs available exclusively for Microsoft Windows systems do not work on the SSCC. Questions about class assignments should always be referred to the instructor or teaching assistant. From time to time, data are received on unconventional media, such as magnetic tape, punched cards, old floppy disk formats and paper forms. Media conversion services can transfer your data to more conventional media and even provide your data to you via the network. See Media and Data Conversion Service Bureaus for more information. Problems requiring the attention of a Linux system administrator are usually machine-specific. Send email to SSCC-INFO to notify the system administrators of the problem. System administrators should only be brought to bear on a problem after more general troubleshooting procedures have been exhausted. Training in the use of Linux and the Social Sciences Research Cluster is available to individuals, small groups and classes. Contact Bruce Foster to make the arrangement. Short courses in statistical and mathematical software are no longer offered on a recurring basis. Training for small groups and individuals can be arranged: Contact Bruce Foster for statistical programming assistance and advice regarding access to social science data. For account applications follow the "Account Application" link in the upper left menu. The NU Library's Social Science Data Services group acquires and manages an extensive library of computer data files used for secondary analysis. Technical consulting, access and documentation is provided in NUL's Department of Government Publications. Bruce Foster serves as the technical contact to the statistical software vendors. We try to provide access to a wide variety of statistical packages. Many are site-licensed and are available to all Linux systems in the SSCC. Because each package is licensed differently, access restrictions vary greatly. Site-licensing questions should be referred to Bruce Foster. If you wish to add a Linux system to the SSCC, contact Bruce Foster. We provide help with system planning and configuration, acquisition, and Linux system management. To restore lost files in your home directory from yesterday's read-only disk copy, follow the instructions in Restoring Files Lost From Your Home Directory. To restore lost files in your home directory from system backup tapes, contact Bruce Foster or Jim Lindsay. Contacts
